Yossi & Jagger

January 30th, 2004 Comments Off

Laura and I just got back from seeing Yossi & Jagger at the Angelika. It was interesting to see their relationship in a military context. I think it addressed issues that would have been difficult to broach or perhaps not so believable or maybe just too mired in other elements if it had been shot from an American perspective. It was also interesting to see what it’s like to be in the closet from yet another perspective.

After seeing the movie we stopped by Plano Super Bowl. It stunk like all bowling places do and it was full of the typical riff-raff you’d expect in a bowling place, but we enjoyed a nice game of House of the Dead II.

PF Changs

What a fun lunch. We went to PF Changs (my first time there) and we ate family style so I got to try a lot of different things. They didn’t get pot stickers but they had this stuff to make lettuce wraps that were pretty good. Not sure what I liked the most. Probably one of the almond chicken dishes. I still don’t like brown rice.

I gave everyone a lesson in using chopsticks but no one felt comfortable enough to use them. I also gave a brief explanation about the Japanese language’s use of Chinese characters.

Vanessa said she knew someone who would get cravings for and eat dust from the attic. And the people I rode over to the restaurant with aren’t keeping up with the primaries and the last movies they’d seen were Along Came Polly and Love Actually. Also, they didn’t know who Jennifer Connelly is (I didn’t realize she was in Labyrinth). Shrug.

Alright, I’m a convert. I think I was hearing some remixed version on the techno station before that wasn’t as good as the original mix I heard this morning.

SMU Suckas

January 29th, 2004 Comments Off

Well, I sent off that SMU app. I was looking online to call the place I was taking it to and I found a place you could submit the application over the internet! Those suckas. It kind of sucks spending money to apply to a place you don’t really want to go to. It does offer some relief though to have one more application out there. And there would be other benefits associated with staying here. Ah well. I can’t say that I didn’t try.

I really need to get into school though. Even this little Japanese class has got me excited. One nice thing is that I don’t really have anything on my plate now. All of my time is mine. Wow. I still have some blog stuff to catch up on, but maybe I’ll read some critical theory. I need to get finished with Gravity’s Rainbow first though.

My Dad, the Entrepreneurial Hero

January 27th, 2004 Comments Off

What a strange dream. My dad and I were in this small town that was going under, and my father beseeched the town to invest in his company to give everyone jobs and keep the town afloat. My dad was also donating this huge house we were living in to the university for some reason as a historical place. I started crying and told him that material possessions were meaningless and that we were now vagabonds, but that all we needed in the world was each other. There was some weird side story about the university guy who was going to get control’s son having malice towards us and the probability of the son wrecking the house now that it was more his than ours.

Break dancing Catholics

Papal blessing for break-dancers VATICAN CITY (AP) — In an unusual spectacle at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II presided over a performance of break-dancers who leaped, flipped and spun their bodies to beats from a tinny boom box.

Is the Pope just beating the Onion to the punch? I guess it’s all for the best since Stephen Hawking denied being assaulted (though they are investigating his wife).

My Late-Term Abortion

January 26th, 2004 Comments Off

My Late-Term Abortion President Bush’s attempt to ban partial-birth abortions threatens all late-term procedures. But in my case, everyone said it was the right thing to do — even my Catholic father and Republican father-in-law.

More along the abortion lines. Not much to say. Just more to think about.

Virginity for Sale

Student is selling her virginity on the internet for £10,000 A student is so hard up she has decided to make the ultimate sacrifice …she is selling her virginity to the highest bidder on the internet.

Also interesting…

Update: I noticed that a few people are finding this whilst searching for it on the net, so I thought I would put the latest information (especially since the above link has been updated and I now have access to a picture). I didn’t comment on it when I first posted, but there is little deep analysis I can provide other than the obvious, but I suppose I could spell some of it out.

The Great Book Trek

(Click for video.)

It was a long day and I should be in bed, because tomorrow is going to be long too. After work I went to the UT Southwestern Medical library and then I went to the SMU library, all made possible by public transportation. The UT library is on the West side of Dallas, and the SMU library is West of Mockingbird Station.

It was a little frustrating at points, but it wasn’t so bad overall. I had some lucky breaks, like catching shuttles to the, and I ran into lots of really nice people that helped me get around. It’s kind of crazy to think about.

Some guy was at the TRE stop near the medical center with a woman and two kids. Their train came and they left going West to Ft. Worth, but the guy didn’t go with them. Then on the train back from Mockingbird there was this 10 year old girl, kind of chubby, with long dark hair in tails, talking to two people behind her in their twenties. She talked to them the whole time I was on the train and they mostly just listened. I don’t know what she was talking about but I heard her mention Gandalf.

Where am I?
