Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I’m not a great fan of Harry Potter and the movie was just ok, so I really don’t have much to say.

The only thing that stuck out for me was the whole football and homecoming-ish quasi-prom dance with all of the boy/girl interaction jitters that go along with it. I know I can’t expect much and it is a kids movie, but it was just so heteronormative. Straight romance is such a played out and tired narrative.

Other than that… Voldemort is back? And Draco is a follower? Yeah…

Chris called and told me about how great it was in D.C. and I told him that I was surprisingly happy here in Lafayette, then I worked on fieldnotes.

Later I met with my group at Panera to discuss our findings and settle on an approach for the paper and presentation. All things considered, it went quite well and the project turned out to be far more interesting than I imagined it would be, as well as reasonable in terms of time and effort.

After that I went to Puccini’s with Yuliya, her boyfriend Mike, George, Andy, and his wife Heidi for Yuliya and George’s birthdays. While there we talked about scary movies, and Yuliya and Andy talked about their scary experiences being in cold water. Andy also said that Heidi almost got stolen from him once in Mexico.

When dinner was over George went back to the apartment to clean (he did a really good job) and I went with the rest of the gang, sans-Mike, to get some cake at Payless. We sang happy birthday then had cake while watching the Goonies and Homewrecker. I’m sure we discussed some interesting things but I don’t remember any of them.

I stayed up quite late wrapping my head around Sedgwick’s “queer performativity” as it related to my work and ended up being quite pleased with my (still forming) grasp on queer theory and globalization.

I did some more reading and was really proud of myself for sending off a card and present to my mom for her birthday! (Yay GTD!!!)

After that I went to the Greater Lafayette Chinese Alliance Church’s thanksgiving dinner to do some research for class. In spite of some discussion about evolution with a guy there at the beginning it went quite well.

From there I went to pick up Suzanne from the airport in Indy. When I stopped to get gas on the way back it was extremely cold.

I woke around 2 and later went with Mark to have thanksgiving dinner with some of his friends. They had football on the whole time and there was a puppy there driving me crazy by trying to eat me and my property, but the food was good. At dinner everyone talked about their various thanksgiving related food experiences and more, touching on spam and vienna sausages, as well as vegemite. The hosts put together a reasonable thanksgiving dinner performance, Martha Stewart inspired as it was. After dinner Mark went with me to feed the cats again.

I woke up around 2:30, made a mad dash to the library, and started thinking about using an indirect access filing system.

Mark and I tried to go to Moe’s for dinner but it was closed, so we went to Chik-Fil-A. I felt like a loser because my actual liking of the place started to overpower the kitsch factor, but we talked about sex toys and their inventors to balance things out.

After that we stopped at Target and I got a great new portable action folder and then we went to Steak & Shake and I got my usual double chocolate chip shake (which I just found out has 753 calories!).

Mark went with me to feed the cats then I was up late reading some great stuff from this book on Foucault and feminism.

After 205, where there were a few people present, I worked on two papers for 505.

In 505 we talked about transgendered people in genderless societies and I brought up my idea about why we don’t encourage transgendered people to just accept their bodies.

I felt a little lonely after class and took a much needed nap, but I ended up having dinner at Khana Khazana and seeing the new Harry Potter movie with Hubert and Allan, with a break in between at Borders (Allan went home but decided he’d watch the movie after all and came back).

I woke late at 11 after some weird semiotics and economic anthropology induced dream.

At Stone I proofed my paper some more but wasn’t able to finish it in time for class.

In 605 we talked about abduction and “committing an act of data.”

Then I went to the lab and worked on my paper some more eventually finishing it, with a dinner break at Moe’s with Carolyn.

I skipped out on church then went to Triple XXX with Mark, Allan, and Hubert. It was hard to carry on business as usual because we were all sitting in a line at the counter. However, I did find out that Mark actually did forget about having gone to Panera before with me and he mistakenly thought it was his first time there when he went with Hubert last night.

After breakfast I went to the Greater Lafayette Chinese Alliance Church again with Yuliya and Sabrina for 505. All I really have to say about that.

When that was done I went to Fu Lam with Carolyn and had pork lo mein, read some in Stone for 505, then walked with Carolyn over to the Union and napped while she met with her group. Before I went to sleep for good I had this mystical vision of a diamond with a bar in the middle slowling expanding and contracting.

Insight into the female mind.
