  • 06:17 PM – Slipping a bit. Been awake for a while. Had an interesting conversation with my sister Yvette about parents.
  • 03:04 AM – New Year’s Eve was low key just as I planned. I went over to Joe and Megan’s, then we stopped by their neighbor’s house, and ended up at Monica’s place — Brett and some other people I’ve met were there. At Monica’s we mostly played games — Dirty Mind, Mr. Lucky, and Whoonu — with a brief excursion to a neighbor’s house to watch the ball drop (we were a few seconds late, but he has TiVo so he just rewound it and we relived the moment). I didn’t tell anyone it was my birthday.
  • I played Final Fantasy IV some more, watched Good Will Hunting, then worked on my statement. All in all I didn’t really care for Good Will Hunting, especially the heteronormative ending — +.

  • 07:07 PM – Just woke up a while ago and am working on grad apps.
  • I ended up spending forever playing Raiden and Final Fantasy IV on a SNES emulator.

  • 03:01 PM – I’m sitting in the Houston airport waiting for the flight to Indianapolis. Dad got off work early and he went to Pho John’s with Jacqui and me for lunch before going to the airport — mom didn’t come. Dad said he didn’t get anything out of Brokeback Mountain, but Jacqui hasn’t been able to stop thinking about it. I need to figure out how to keep in touch better…
  • 04:57 PM – Sweet! I just found half of an old banana when I went to get my Skymall Magazine!
  • 07:44 PM – Now I’m in Indy waiting for the shuttle to Lafayette.
  • The ride back home was fine, but it was a long walk from the Purdue Memorial Union to my house…

  • 11:38 AM – So hard to wake up this morning. Lots of snoozing and weird little dreams.
  • 02:32 PM – I’m at the theater with my dad about to watch Black Christmas. Before this we ate at Rosa’s and before that I gave up hope on getting my mp3 player back — still no sign at the airline.
  • The movie was - — about what I expected. Dad took me to Best Buy after and I spent forever looking at mp3 players. If the new shuffle came with in ear headphones I would have gotten it. Then I was going to get the new Sansa but the guy said it didn’t mount as a mass storage device, so I decided to just get the same mp3 player I had before, but they didn’t have the 2gb version so I had my dad take me to Circuit City. They had a new Sansa that you could actually play with there and I found that it COULD mount as a USB drive. After putting a lot of thought into the headphones I should buy I went back to Best Buy because they didn’t have the 2gbs at Circuit City but ended up deciding to get the 4gb anyway.
  • Back at home my parents watched this movie Holiday Heart about a transgendered woman who had to care for a friend’s child. At one point the woman described the difference between older queers who valued privacy vs. younger queers who “let it all hang out.” I was slightly mesmerized and explained to my dad that that was very similar to the work I am doing on gays in Japan.
  • After Jacqui got off work I met up with her at Target so she could do some shopping then we picked up Thank You for Not Smoking on the way home — ++-.

  • After eating lunch I went over to Jacqui’s and spent some time catching up on the Internet. I came across a really good fan-made video for Venetian Snares — it’s so beautiful, it makes my eyes tear up (seriously).
  • My family decided to keep it low-key this year so just the four of us went to Fox and Hound for dinner. Mom enjoyed the kryptonite ritas. I think we may have started a tradition.
  • After dinner we went home and watched Brokeback Mountain then had some German chocolate cake for my birthday. Mom reminded us several times that it was made from scratch.

  • I met Jacqui at the mall so she could buy some gifts, then we stopped by Target. After that she went to work and I went to Barne’s and Noble for a long time to drink coffee and read magazines — there were several interesting articles in the Economist, such as this one on the compatibility of capitalism and postmodernity. I also took a look at some poetry books, but the only thing I liked was the 2006 collection of American poetry.
  • Later on I went to church with mom, dad, and Jacqui. Nothing particularly notable or interesting about it, though I did raise an eyebrow when the priest privileged the spiritual self over the physical body during the homily.
  • Back at home we ate some pizza Jacqui brought from work and watched some TV after listening to the new Muse CD I got for Jacqui. I watched the BBC world news then caught parts of Star Wars III before watching Best Year Ever.

  • 08:29 PM – I’m at Sweet Eugene’s and finally able to use the Internet. I woke relatively late then watched part of Fantastic Four and this program on tourette’s. Later I took some keys to my mom because she locked herself out of her car, looked at mp3 players at Best Buy, got some gifts at Barnes & Noble, then came here.
  • After Sweet Eugene’s I met Jacqui at Cheddar’s for dinner. We were going to watch a movie or something but it was too late and we were both real tired.

  • I woke early and took my mom to work so I could have the car, and then the day kind of disappeared as I failed to get the dial-up on my computer towork and watched part of a strange Japanese movie Dolls, capped off with a long nap.
  • 08:10 PM – My brother and his wife just left.
  • In the evening I watched Prozac Nation with my dad and didn’t see why everyone was saying it was terrible — I thought it was ok. Then when my sister got off work we went to Mad Hatters in Northgate. A guy I met there agreed with me that humans are ultimately oriented towards pleasure.

  • 08:40 AM – We’ll have to see how my sleep schedule fares here. Keep in mind that with the time zone difference it is “really” 9:40 a.m.
  • How quickly habits die. It was pretty frustrating during the day because I didn’t have a car or access to the Intenet. I was also frustrated because I figured out that I left my mp3 player on the plane. Eventually I was able to do some reading and writing.
  • When my parents got home we went to Double Dave’s for dinner. Then I went with my dad to Home Depot and HEB.
  • Late in the evening my sister Jacqui came over and we watched The Devil Wears Prada — it was quite terrible. Then we talked about her plans for traveling over the summer.

Where am I?
