- 05:59 AM – Some difficulty getting up this morning. Now I have to work on Japanese.
- 08:57 AM – Off to school now. Japanese eats my brain.
- 01:44 PM – Been back from school for a while. This Japanese class is being taught much harder than the last one I took, but I think I’ll be better for it. When we don’t know the answer the teacher goes into her stern act saying things like, “What? You don’t know what this word means? Well didn’t you study for the vocabulary quiz?” — it’s so precious. After class I paid my tuition and picked up a book on anthropological theory from interlibrary loan. Now I’ve just woken from a nap and I’m trying to figure out what I should GTD next.
- 01:56 PM – Weird. There was a cop car in the alley taking somebody away.
- 12:02 AM – Earlier I cleaned up, paid the rent, got some party supplies, then cleaned some more, and finished Northern Lights and season 1 disc 4 of Twin Peaks. When Hubert came home for a bit I told him this story about a student in Japanese who surprised me by joking around about being a manager at a gay bar. After that I watched Little Miss Sunshine while compiling music for the party — Jeremiah doesn’t agree with my mellow selection. I’m going to read and try to sleep but I’m not feeling very lucky.

- 04:58 AM – Hello day.
- 05:41 PM – I suppose I should check in. In the morning I jumped rope and looked at some grad app stuff. Then I went to Stone for my office hours and read some Geertz. April said she thought the statement that sexuality is fluid is just as essentialist as essentialism, and I tried to explain why it is not. Then I got into a big discussion with Brandi about the limits of thinking about sex solely in biological terms. After that I worked on some things for the class I am TAing (gender across cultures) then went to that class — Evie talked about primates. When class was over I took some things to be put on reserve and watched Colbert on the bus ride home. Now I’m on the way to my Atheism Discussion Group meeting — today we’re talking about spiritual atheism.
- 09:18 PM – ADG was interesting. It’s hard to sort out the merely social aspect of ritual. Is that why we meet? I suppose there is a certain perspective we share with each other that is difficult to find elsewhere. After that I spent a long time waiting to return a case for my mp3 player and then another long time deciding on a replacement. I think I’m going to read a bit now before going to bed.

- 05:14 AM – Oh yeah, I’ve been up for about 45 minutes.
- 07:27 PM – Japanese is going to be way hard this semester. Carolyn locked herself out of her car and was running late to school, so after class I drove her car home with a stop at the library on the way (why was Postsecret labeled for young adults?). At home I finally tracked down the guy who’s license Hubert found in Chicago and got his address to send it to him. I went back out to get some groceries then gave Nakia a ride when I saw her carrying a heavy load on the sidewalk — we chatted about her AP project and her use of “interpretive thematic analysis” and the sociology department’s uncomfortable relationship with qualitative work. Once I got everything put away I went to pick up Carolyn and we had dinner at Moe’s — it was my payment for helping her out. I went ahead and took a peek around Borders after we ate and saw some decent looking books on poetry and writing for classes here at Purdue. Now I am at home for good and considering sleep after having done a little bit of fiction reading. I need to start writing these things as they occur.

- 05:17 AM – And I’m up…
- 07:10 AM – Jump rope, Keith and the Girl, feeds, and coffee.
- 08:35 AM – Working on a party invite and watching Grave of the Fireflies. What a powerful movie…
- 11:58 AM – Processed and watched more of the movie… On the way to school now.
- 06:33 PM – The anth class was fine, but I had to run back to Stone when we got there because we didn’t get the syllabi. The room is nice and teched out. My favorite part is the document cam. I was in the office for a bit, went to PUSH, went home for a bite and to get my car, and now I’m in my history of gender class.
- 10:48 PM – Class was and should be great. Sally recited various east Asian histories around the year 1858. I finished Grave of the Fireflies when I got home. Such a sad movie, and now my favorite, nudging Stalker aside. I kept thinking of my sister while watching it. Now I need to sleep. We’ll see how that goes.

- 11:29 PM – Dear GOD, how long was I asleep? I really don’t know how to fix this sleep thing. I think some polyphasic sleeping is in order.
- 12:37 AM – Maybe Disintegration Street isn’t so bad. Maybe it’s my favorite Cure album. Maybe I should have seen them when I had the chance. Oh, the memories… I was always Stephen Morrissey to your Robert Smith. And somewhere deep in my heart I will always love you, in my own complicated and unresolvable way.
- 12:38 AM – I figured out that it isn’t really school I am dreading, but Japanese — that class is so much work.
- 03:42 AM – I got lost again. This time it was back into vim on my pocket pc.
- 04:24 PM – Before going to school I finished up some grad app stuff and jumped rope, among other processing. I have a different teacher for Japanese this semester and I think it’s going to be harder, though we do have this interesting blog exercise we have to do. After that I spent some time in the lab finding information on Geertz and semiotics, helped Carolyn with some grad app stuff, then met with Evie about the class I am TAing for. Now I’m doing i/o at the library.
- 07:53 PM – I’ve been home for a while from dinner with Carolyn at Taco Rico. She told me about department drama. I was reading about interviewing then moved on to Clifford’s Writing Culture. I’m not as tired as I should be but I should be going to bed soon.

- 05:45 AM – A noise must have woken me up. I wasn’t wearing my earplugs. I could hear a truck idling loudly when I became conscious. Maybe that was it.
- 08:45 AM – Hmmm, still awake — and caught up on my feeds. What do we do now?
- 10:33 AM – Did some reading and I lay down while listening to music, but no luck — still awake.
- 06:29 PM – Wow, I was in some deep sleep. But now I need to get ready for my trip to Indy with Hubert, Joe, and Megan.
- 05:20 AM – Oh man, Indy was great. We went to PF Changs for dinner and the wait went by fast and the food was great. We split up eggplant stir-fry, ginger chicken and broccoli, and this sweet shrimp dish that was really good. While we were waiting I asked Megan if she liked Boggle, and she said, “Isn’t that the game where you shake the dice?” I laughed and said that could describe several dozen games, like Yahtzee, and she said, “Wait, that’s the game I was thinking of…” Hee hee… After PF Changs we went to Talbott Street and saw some people we knew from Lafayette. Hubert and I were a little worried because it was pretty empty but it filled up at midnight. I was really stoked because they played a club remix of two of my favorite songs: Me & U by Cassie and Show Stopper by Danity Kane. We took a break from dancing to see the drag show, and even though it was fill-ins and not the regular performers I thought it was pretty great. There was an interesting r&b/rap theme going on, and a large performer did a really nice fat-positive piece to a snippet of the Queens of Comedy. On the way home we stopped at McDonald’s for snacks.

- 11:46 AM – Darn. I woke up a bit around 7 and noticed that the clock switch was on alarm, but I guess it didn’t set when I moved it back. Some woman’s yelling outside woke me up, and for that I’m actually grateful, but I didn’t catch anything she said.
- 02:25 AM – Hee hee, didn’t see that coming did you? Let me go in order… I felt tired and non-productive in the afternoon then I registered for classes and felt better — more Japanese and gender in world history. Shortly after that Hubert and I went to Office Depot and the outdoors store next to it. I exchanged a file cabinet at Office Depot and got a small light and mini Swiss pocket knife at the outdoors store. After that we stopped by Culver’s for banana splits. Later we went to Joe and Megan’s and watched a couple episodes of QI, some British game/entertainment show about things that are quite interesting. I really need to get back on the increments train…
- 02:28 AM – So, about Another Gay Movie… I’m glad I waited to write about it because Hubert drew out the connection I first noticed. I pointed out that there was a scene with quiche that was very similar to the scene in American Pie, but when Hubert said the whole movie was basically a gay version of that movie I saw other connections. It’s all about these gay young men who vow to have sex before the summer is over and they go to college, and it’s pretty over the top with some of the things they show in the film — I’ll leave it at that. What got me though is that they even have a scene where one of the kids shows up on the Internet via a webcam.

- 01:46 PM – I had some productive things planned for today and got up around 7 a.m., but I got sucked into working on my website… It’s never good or fun when you have to custom code something, but I’m glad I figured out how to do it.
- 09:58 PM – I gotta update before I step out. Hubert and I are on our way to meet Kris at Chumley’s. I got a few things done and felt better then did some more work on my website — I have to say I’m quite pleased. Oh yes, I finally told Hubert about the present I wanted to get him since I decided it’s too expensive ($65) — this book on famous libraries. He loved it, as I knew he would.
- 01:23 AM – I’m tired. Perhaps I’ll even sleep. Chumley’s was great. The break was low-key for all and none of us are excited about school. I think Cathryn had a good time hanging out with us. Food talk made me hungry.
- 01:33 AM – I almost forgot this movie that Hubert and I saw earlier: Another Gay Movie. I’ll say more about it tomorrow…

- 07:14 AM – I couldn’t stay asleep — maybe this will be my reset. I just worked on grad apps last night and sent a couple off — they’re so expensive.
- 10:42 AM – Wheee… We’ve got a full house. Hubert just got home a while ago and we showed each other our Christmas toys: he got a really nice external hard drive. Maintenance people are also here fixing the drain.
- 02:05 AM – Day goes by. I’m not sure why I am not more tired. I’ve been back for a while from a party at Megan’s. I find Nicole to be very humorous. Everyone had things to do, so we had to cut the party short, but not to despair — Hubert and I made a special trip to Meijer’s. I got some tongs, he got some shoelaces, and we both looked at home decorating magazines.
- 02:07 AM – Sorry this is out of order but I’m trying to avoid non-timestamped posts. Before going to Megan’s party I went to campus to print out a writing sample, picked up my gifts from Yvette, went to the post office, and then stopped by the library to pick up some DVDs. After that I talked to Chris and he told me about proposing to his girlfriend, followed by more grad apps.
